Abstention

Abstention is a way of manipulating the vote on a law or increasing the number of assassinations.

How to play this card: Abstention can be played openly or secretly as a vote. If you decide to play the card openly, you can remove one vote card during the entire Phase III (including during the counting). Only thumb cards count.
If you play the card face down as a vote on a law, all assassination values of assassinations found in the same pile are increased by 5.

Tips and Tricks

Here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • Abstentions can negate cards, so they are helpful if you do not want to pass a law and therefore want to negate a thumbs up.
  • Wait until the count with abstention, because then you will know what you are negating.
  • Alternatively, you can play a variant where each vote can be removed while it is still hidden. With enough instinct, entire assassinations could be negated.

FAQ und Klarstellungen

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions, clarifications, and perhaps even one or two unconventional methods for playing the respective card whose special case is regulated here.

What happens if I want to negate a face-down card and it turns out not to be a voting card?

Nothing happens with the card then and your abstention is discarded. Therefore, wait for the count to play your abstention.
Alternatively, you can also play that face-down cards can always be removed from abstentions.
