Severe Drought

Do not play this card unless you are certain it will benefit you. It halves the yield from the most important food fields and triggers triage almost immediately.

How to play it: Place a 1/2 token on the Hill Country, Calvus Archipelago, and Southern Colonies. These remain permanently on the game board. Then, in the next cycle, play Phase I twice in a row. Note that you repeat the entire phase, not just the alternating placement. This means that the cycle cube is also increased, a new doctrine is drawn, and a new initiative auction is held. The player with the fewest armies must also select a resource and return half of it to the supply. The rest is placed in the market.

Tips and Tricks

Here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • Use this card to double your number of conquest moves in war, as Phase I is played twice!
  • Draw 2x Doctrine in one cycle with this card and receive 2x free material with it – ideal if you are behind and the others are limited by their hand card limit, for example!
  • Playing Phase I twice drives the cycle cube up twice in one cycle. Effects that scale with the cycle cube benefit from this, e.g. assassinations or privileges!
  • Bear in mind that striking the militarily weakest player may drive them to an act of desperation (Priam’s Revenge), especially since – if Triage is active – up to 3 victory conditions can be discarded by not donating!
  • Also bear in mind that after the two phases I, players are usually rich, except in food. However, this usually triggers the triage crisis almost immediately, causing them to lose victory conditions!
