Magnate

The magnate controls the central bank and thus the money value counter – with this, he can arbitrarily revalue or devalue money, i.e. trigger inflation or deflation. The magnate influences the game in the most subtle way!

How to play this: When it is your turn as magnate with your role card effect, you may move the capital value marker. To do this, take twice the value of the active cycle. This is the maximum number of steps you may take, but you are not required to take them all.

Example: If you are in the second cycle, the magnate may change the capital value by four steps. He decides to lower the capital value from +1 to -2, thereby increasing war by 2. He does not have to take all four steps.

Tips and Tricks

Here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • Capital is your key resource! Earn it by raising prices on the markets and use it when prices are low to empty markets in one fell swoop! As a magnate, you have a massive influence on potential transaction volumes and can maximise your own accordingly!
  • High prices motivate players to sell. This increases the likelihood of ‘monopoly’ being triggered, as selling goods suddenly becomes worthwhile!
  • Low prices motivate players to buy up markets, which increases the risk of triage and tyranny over the emptying of the ‘food’ and ‘syncanite’ markets.
  • The crisis points on the money value scale can only be triggered once per game, just like the +10 crisis points on the markets!
  • If you can acquire the privilege of ‘insider trading,’ you will have the time of your life!

FAQs and Clarifications

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions, clarifications, and perhaps even one or two unconventional methods for playing the respective card, the special case of which has been regulated here.

What other effects influence the monetary value counter?

Triggering a revolution normalises prices by forcing the market to + – 0. War increases the marker by +3 and may trigger a revolution. Tyranny reduces the marker by -3 and often triggers war. Take advantage of this or prevent it by positioning the marker appropriately on the scale – especially since you can move the marker further each round and even place it freely from the third cycle onwards!
